NOTE:: NGK and Denso tend to use a system where higher numbers indicate a colder plug (more heat dissipation). For example, an NGK 8 is colder than an NGK 6. Alternatively, Champion, Autolite, and Bosch often use the opposite system, where higher numbers indicate a hotter plug (less heat dissipation). For example, a Champion 8 is hotter than a Champion 6

NOTE:: Understanding the spark plug's heat range is fundamentally about comprehending its ability to dissipate heat away from the critical firing tip to the engine's cooling system via the cylinder head. It's a delicate balance; the plug must run hot enough (above approximately 500°C or 932°F) to burn off carbon and combustion deposits (known as the self-cleaning temperature) but cool enough (below approximately 800°C or 1472°F). Those who live in warmer climates may prefer to run a NGK 6 plug over the standard 5 in a specific application to avoid becoming an ignition source itself, which causes pre-ignition and potential detonation under higher demand use
